The importance of a healthy lunch….
It is so important that our children have a healthy, balanced, nutritious lunch. Research has shown that if they eat well, our children are provided with the energy and nutrients they need to concentrate better, behave better and learn better.
At Farley Hill, we are proud of the fantastic school meals provided by Mrs Hudson and her team in the Eat Smart Café, where they prepare all food from scratch on site. We are a flagship school for the Food for Life Programme and meet the Gold Award criteria of the Catering Mark. This means that we:
meet all of the Government standards for school food
serve fresh, healthy, ethical, local ingredients – including seasonal and free range produce where possible
provide for pupils’ special dietary requirements, including those relating to: religious and cultural beliefs; food allergies; and vegetarian/vegan diets
have links with local providers, including Jennings Butler and Lockey Farm
act as advisers for other local schools.
We operate a three-weekly menu cycle so that children are provided with a variety of meals. There is a daily choice of a hot main meal, vegetarian option or jacket potato. Water is always available. No salt is used in our meals and we are lowering sugar content too.
The Eat Smart Café provides an enjoyable lunchtime experience and environment. All children sit at solid wood tables with a comfortable chair in order to eat their lunch. Meals are served on plates – not on plasic trays with compartments mixing their main meal and pudding! This helps children to establish and maintain lifelong healthy eating habits.
Our kitchen has received 5 stars rating, reaching the highest possible score of excellence by “Food Hygiene Rating System”.
We recommend that the well-balanced hot meal provided by the Eat Smart Café is the best option for children.
